— The first-time feature film stars are just getting started with Logan, the film that has been described as the ultimate zombie movie.
“It’s the perfect example of a project where you’re just starting out and you’ve got a great script and the director’s really good, and then it comes to this,” says Chris Evans.
The director’s team had a few ideas for the film, but none were quite what he was looking for.
“I just wanted to tell a really strong story,” he says.
“The characters were all so likable, but there were some elements that were kind of silly and just didn’t mesh with what I was going for.”
So the film’s lead actor, Liam Neeson, had a rough idea for the plot, which is why the film was not set in the fictional town of Logan, Ill., but in the rural hamlet of Ligon.
But it turned out Neesons production team was just as creative as he was.
“Chris and I just came up with these really simple ideas that were really interesting,” Evans says.
The script went through a number of revisions, but it ended up being something he thought was really good.
“He was just like, ‘No, I think this is really good,'” says Neesson.
“So we just kind of kept working on it and just kept getting more and more creative and more and better.”
The result is a film that is just as smart as the character he plays.
“Logan” stars Hugh Jackman, Evan Peters, Michael B. Jordan, and Callan Mulvey as a group of survivors of the zombie apocalypse in a small town in the Midwest.
The film follows their struggle to survive in an unforgiving environment and is based on a book by John Scalzi.
The story centers around a small group of men and women from a small rural community, all of whom are forced to live in an environment where they can’t trust one another or one another’s friends.
The main characters, as well as the other survivors are portrayed by the same actors, which was a huge help for the production team.
“We wanted to keep them all the same, we wanted them to have similar voices and the same looks and just have similar things going on,” Evans explains.
The most important thing for the filmmakers was that their characters were likable.
“What’s important for the audience is that the characters all had their flaws,” says Evans.
“If they’re all likable then they all have something to be likable about.”
But the biggest thing they wanted for the characters was a strong villain, and that was what the film has in the form of Logan.
“To me, he’s the ultimate villain,” says Neeons production director, Mike O’Malley.
“There’s something that I would love to have in a movie like this, and he’s very much like me in the way he carries himself.
He’s a man who wants to take over the world.
He has no regard for human life.”
And the film makes clear that there are other survivors in the area who might be willing to help.
“That’s a great villain for the world to see,” says actor Michael B-Jordan.
“They’ve got no idea what’s going on, but they’re still willing to come help.”
For the cast, it was all about making the film their own.
“You have to be yourself and show what you can do, and when you have that, it’s going to be really good,” says Peters.
“For me, that’s how I want to live my life.”
For Nees, it also comes down to just making sure his voice was as good as it could be.
“When I’m doing a script and I have an idea for something and I think I know what I’m going to say, I just have to trust my voice and let the character come to me,” he explains.
“Every character in the film is a little bit of me.”
